Tactile interactions in the path of tactile apparent motion

چکیده
Perceptual completion is a fundamental perceptual function serving to maintain robust perception against noise. For example, we can perceive vivid experience of motion even for the discrete inputs across time and space (apparent motion: AM). In vision, stimuli irrelevant AM are suppressed smooth along trajectory where no physical applied. We investigated whether such masking induced by dynamic general sensory modalities focusing on touch. Participants tried detect vibro-tactile target stimulus presented two other tactile forearm. control condition, inducing were applied simultaneously, resulting in percept. Tactile detection was impaired with AM. Our findings support notion that mechanism rather than specific effect.

Multimodal Ternus: visual, tactile, and visuo-tactile grouping in apparent motion.
Gestalt rules that describe how visual stimuli are grouped also apply to sounds, but it is unknown if the Gestalt rules also apply to tactile or uniquely multimodal stimuli. To investigate these rules, we used lights, touches, and a combination of lights and touches, arranged in a classic Ternus configuration. Three stimuli (A, B, C) were arranged in a row across three fingers. A and B were pre...
متن کاملAccuracy of Velocity Perception Generated by Tactile Apparent Motion
The objective of this study is to empirically compare the accuracy of velocity perception generated by visual apparent motion with that generated by tactile apparent motion. From the results, the subjects were able to perceive velocity information through tactile stimulus presentation more accurately than through visual stimulus presentation. When tactile stimuli were presented, the effect of a...
متن کاملTactile rivalry demonstrated with ambiguous apparent motion quartet
When observers view ambiguous visual stimuli, their perception will often alternate between the possible interpretations, a phenomenon termed " perceptual rivalry " [1]. To induce perceptual rivalry in the tactile domain, we developed a new tactile illusion, based on the visual apparent motion " quartet " [2]. Pairs of 200 ms vibrotactile stimuli were applied to the finger pad at intervals sepa...

متن کاملMutual influences of intermodal visual/tactile apparent motion and auditory motion with uncrossed and crossed arms.
Intra-modal apparent motion has been shown to be affected or 'captured' by information from another, task-irrelevant modality, as shown in cross-modal dynamic capture effect. Here we created inter-modal apparent motion between visual and tactile stimuli and investigated whether there are mutual influences between auditory apparent motion and inter-modal visual/tactile apparent motion. Moreover,...
